Innovation in cities is creating new benefits for citizens and efficiencies for city governance. Many of these innovations are triggered by Information Technology (IT) advances. But considering the rapid pace of IT innovation, how can cities plan for and maintain the desired benefits? This workshop and showcase are key to creating reusable patterns and practices that cities can use to achieve and sustain Smart City benefits in infrastructure resilience, public safety, improved governance, and quality of life for all residents.
The workshop is organized as a series of conversations to both “teach and learn” from each other. Participants will be invited to share their experiences with smart city deployments including successes and lessons learned. Through a combination of presentations and breakout sessions, we will work towards identifying the requirements, constraints, and measures of success for smart city innovation most important to city stakeholders, particularly from a perspective of repeatable innovation, deployment, and operations. The results of the stakeholder needs workshop will inform development of a Smart City Interoperability Reference Architecture (SCIRA) by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). SCIRA will be a standards-based architecture and corresponding deployment guides for Smart Cities. The showcase will include solutions designed to support First Responder capabilities in the Smart City environment that are part of the Smart City IoT Innovation (SCITI) initiative.
This event was jointly organized for OGC's SCIRA initiative and by the SCITI innovation lab of the Center for Innovative Technology (CIT). SCIRA and CIT activities are conducted in collaboration with the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T).
